Photos of some yarn

Here is some of the wool that I dyed with Wilton’s and dubbed “Summer Sherbert.” It was some of the roving that Jeanne sent to me with my first Sleeping Beauty Spindle. It was also spun on my Sleeping Beauty. It was not an entire cop, but I needed to empty my spindle to do some beta-testing stuff. LOL

This is the Falkland Roving named Stray Love Letter that I bought from Sheilah, aka Left Handed Pinkie, before the hurricane insanity. First a photo of the roving…then a close up of what is left of the fine yarn I spun and used for the wrist distaff that I made for my swap partner on Spindlers. I wish I had taken a photo of the wrist distaff before I sent it off, but alas, I did not. I added Swarovski Crystals in violet and lavender, grey and ivory faux pearls, and even some real rice pearls. Considering how insane things have been here, it is sort of a miracle that I got it done. I am really hoping that I get one from my partner. :-)

Maybe things will start to get back to normal for me. I have an awful lot of spinning and stitching that I really need to be doing, but I just have not been in the mood lately.

Joss Whedon is my hero…

Okay, I admit it. I love Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel and Firefly. I am anxiously awaiting the release of Serenity tomorrow, which is no big surprise considering the title of this post. I have a couple of seasons of BVS on DVD, but since getting TiVo I just record, watch & delete. In some cases, over and over again. :-)

I am a big fan of the willing suspension of disbelief. I like to disengage from reality and hey, I am a word hound. When I took an upper level play writing class, one of the graduate students told me that dialogue was my forte. I often wondered if it was meant to be a sly dig…but of course I never could take a compliment. But one of the things I love about Joss Whedon’s characters seem to relate to one another like real people, gaffes included. LOL

I tend to read a lot of Mysteries and Non-Fiction. I tend to watch a lot of Sci-Fi, Horror and Crime Dramas. The good thing about TV is that I can multi-task. It is nice to knit, spin, or stitch while something interesting is on in the background.

Anyway, that is a little non-crafting slice of me.

The power is back on!

Woo hoo! We have electricity and the router is back up. It is very, very exciting.

I used my time to make a few wired bead things. After dealing with the greasy orifice hook that came with the borrowed Ashford Traditional Double Drive, I decided that I would get some 16 gauge covered copper wire and make a new one! These are the first two designs that I came up with and both of them work perfectly well on the wheel. At least this way I do not have to worry about getting grease spots on my wool. LOL

I meant to take a scan or a photo of Summer Sherbert, but I have not had the time or inclination today. I have been so busy at work, it is really sort of pitiful. LOL

Oh and once again, I am Itchy McScratchy Pants. I am battling yet another case or poison ivy or maybe a rebound of the first one.

My spare battery was charged!

After another day without electricity, I was so excited to discover that my spare battery had been charged before I tucked it away in my laptop case! I spent part of the day shopping, because there was nothing to here. We went to a bookstore, a shoe store, Michael’s, TJ Maxx and Marshall’s. Well, we both went to the bookstore then my poor long suffering husband drove me to those other places and sat in the car reading his new books. As a thank you, I did buy the man something, a few new pair of boxers actually.

Then we made our way home and despite everyone else in the city seeming to be okay, when you turn into our neighborhood, the only things glowing were the gas lights. We came in, unloaded my booty, then sat around looking at one another. It was raining and overcast again, so after a few minutes, I decided to help energize the economy and set out on my own to shop some more.

I tried another shoe store, this time nothing appealed to me, which is probably good, because I have an indecent number of shoes even after donating a slew of them to charity. Then I tried Dress for Less, again, nothing appealed to me. This is not really a big surprise, since I have bought precious little clothing since just before my wedding, nearly three years ago. I think it is the whole weight thing. I have been in denial since gaining weight when my thyroid trouble started. But today, I started looking around Kohl’s and actually bought a bunch of odd and ends on deep clearance.

When I got back, the power was still off, so I sent my husband off to pick up some Indian food. More later, of course.

In the dark all over again

Well, Rita sent some storms our way and when the sun came back out, the power went off and has been off for hours. Good thing we did not fill the fridge and freezer back up completely. I have a few hours of time on my laptop battery and luckily this time the phone lines did not go down, so I used my old dial-up access.

The candlelight is nice, but I would really rather be watching the TiVO. I was really looking forward to catching up on some mindless TV like Buffy, Angel and Andromeda and doing a little stitching. Besides with the power out, it gives me too much time to think about how much I itch. Yes, I have managed to get what I think is poison ivy yet again. This time it is confined to a small area and with luck, it won’t spread too much and I can avoid another round of steroids.

But please don’t think I am complaining, because I am not! We did go out to eat and made a run by Sam’s for gas, TP and other essentials It is so different from a few weeks ago!

I have been working on a project for my friends in the Crazy Gathering group. Making something special for everyone’s birthday. I don’t want to spoil the surprise, so I won’t go into detail or show any photos. I have only done three so far, but they are getting better each time I make one.

I also made some other things, like a wrist distaff with faux and real pearls and swarovski crystals for the swap on Spindlers. I have not done a lot of spinning since Katrina, but I hope to get back into the mood soon. I did however make a really cute orifice threader! Of course, considering how I feel about beads and wire, that is no big surprise. If the power comes back tomorrow, I will do my best to post a picture.

I really appreciate that so many of you were worried about me. It is good to have friends!

Please don’t worry about me

I got a phone call from Jeanne at Simple Market Farms. I am just busy at work and with the other house and EGA things. I did not mean to disconnect, but some days it is easier to communicate than others.

I still have one friend unaccounted for in New Orleans. I have googled him and checked the Katrina sites and have not seen anything on him. Ironically, I spoke of him this weekend on the drive back from Natchez NeedleArts. It made me realize that he lived in sort of a crappy part of New Orleans proper and it has been worrying me ever since. Last time we spoke, it was on the phone, and he was doing well. I hope he made it somewhere safe and dry.

I am hoping that there will not be any reprecussions from the next hurricane out there…Rita.

Alive and Well

Last Saturday I woke up at 4 AM in the hope of getting a tank of gasoline and was successful. Cynthia’s husband and son did the same and they returned to Poplarville. Lisa and I drove to Atlanta on Sunday and went to the EGA National Seminar (we stayed with my mom instead of in the hotel).

I was very much out of touch, because my mom seemed convinced that my being online was some how costing *her* money. I learned a lot at seminar, met some of my online friends, spent too much money and got to forget many of my woes for a week. Now I am back home and will start back posting…maybe tomorrow even. :-)

Doing great, except for the gas situation

I decided to post some photos on my regular website.

http://www.prettyimpressivestuff.com/katrina.htm

With any luck we can all get gas in the morning. The stress, lack of food, and everything else lead to a migraine. :-(

I am so blessed

We waited in a gas line for what seemed like forever and then a transformer blew and they sent us all away before we could get any gas. Thank G-d Lisa has given us her 5 gallon container…because we needed it to get down to Cynthia’s truck and then have everyone get safely back home. I was feeling very discouraged, until we came down the street and power was on at some of the house. Then we passed through a section with no power as we got closer to my house and when we came close, the lights came on. When I finally got into my house, the clock read 12:03…it honestly clicked back on right as we approached. The first thing I did was put two big pots of water on the stove to boil. I am so glad they were able to get power restored ahead of schedule, because it means that our linemen can start to head south to help people to the south of us.

I have almost no gas and there is very, very little to be found. People slept in their cars, hoping and praying that a truck would arrive to refuel the gas station. They keep promising us that it will get better. I sure hope so. At this point, the hospital is asking non-essential employees to take a personal day off from work to try to deal with the critical gas shortage here. It is crazy.

I found Cynthia!!!

I got a phone call last night, they went looking for gas and ended up almost in Jackson…never did get gas and had to abandon their truck for now. I managed to make it there to get them and bring them back to my empty house. But there is electricity and flushing toilets! I have less than one quarter tank of gas left and there is almost no gas to be had anywhere. I just don’t know what we are all going to do. I can’t go stand in line waiting for gas if I am at work. :-( Right now my trip to Atlanta is on hold…we just don’t know if we can get enough gas to make the trip.
